Wednesday 17th February, 2010 The Oman oil producer, Petroleum Development Oman, has announced the discovery of three new oilfields and a gas-field.
The government controlled company has said it hopes to be able to take another 5 per cent from the ground with its new find.
The discovery shows a major oilfield thought to contain about 1 billion barrels of crude. A potentially large gas-field has also shown up on geological maps.
The oil deposits are located in central Oman and are said to contain shallow deposits of heavy crude. The gas discovery in northern Oman will also prove important for the sultanate, which is unable to meet its growing domestic gas demand without imports.
